As part of the WINDABA – South Africa’s premier wind energy conference and exhibition which was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from the 2-4th November 2016, GreenCape participated in the Industry Gives Back campaign, which highlighted careers in the wind energy industry, in this case linked to Atlantis in preparation for the Green Special Economic zone.
Under the guidance of the “Wind for Communities Working Group” the Industry Gives Back Campaign was launched on the Friday, 4th November 2016. The aim of the day was to deliver a differentiated networking platform where stakeholders volunteer time to participate in engaging learners and enhancing existing community based project. In this case Kerria Primary School was the chosen beneficiary of the Industry Gives Back campaign.
A much needed food garden was erected in support of the newly installed “Breadline Soup Kitchen”, which is aimed at feeding in excess of 1500 disadvantaged leaners attending Kerria Primary School in Atlantis. Grade 7 leaners at the school graced the guest with a special song thanking them of their time to plant vegetables at the school. “We are very much grateful that you have chosen our school as a beneficiary of the campaign, may god bless you”, says Michael Grade 7 leaner at Kerria Primary.
Staying with Career awareness an interactive fun filled career expo took place at the South African Manufacturing Demonstration Centre. Grade 10 and 11 leaners from Robinvale high school, Proteus Technical School and Atlantis high school came out in numbers to attend the expo. They were shown exciting career options and see what is possible within the wind industry. This day included interactive activities such as presentations delivered by members of industry ranging from engineering to environmental to make learners familiar with careers in this field. An interactive quiz pitted various teams against each other in the hope of winning some prizes. TRAC of the Stellenbosch University practically demonstrated the mechanics of wind energy generation and a video screening highlighted Africa’s endeavors to mitigate climate change. Additionally the exhibitors from West Coast College, SMTDC and RLabs showed the learners worthwhile pursuits and further learning options to consider after their schooling.
Upon closing the day the learners all resoundingly agreed that this day should be held again, but maybe not on Guy Fawkes weekend.
