Gas

The Western Cape Government has been actively promoting the importation of natural gas into the West Coast of the province. There is also strong support from provincial and local government for the importation of LNG.

Opportunities: Fast facts

  • Natural gas will contribute to the province’s vision for a low-carbon, energy-secure future.

  • Gas-to-power partners well with solar and wind energy, and can also provide baseload.

  • Industries will be able to switch from dirtier fuels (coal and heavy fuel oils) to natural gas, reducing the Western Cape’s carbon footprint.

  • Investment in LNG infrastructure could amount to R21.76 billion, with the potential to create 67 400 jobs (Deloitte 2015)
